Pap smear

A procedure in which cells are scraped from the cervix for examination under a microscope. It is used to detect cancer and changes that may lead to cancer. A Pap smear can also show conditions, such as infection or inflammation, that are not cancer. Also called Pap test and Papanicolaou test.

Procedimiento mediante el cual se raspan células del cuello del útero para examinarlas bajo un microscopio. Se usa para detectar un cáncer o cambios que pueden llevar a un cáncer. Asimismo, un frotis de Pap puede mostrar afecciones, como inflamación e infección que no son cancerosas. También se llama prueba de Pap y prueba de Papanicolaou.
