A procedure in which tissue is frozen to destroy abnormal cells. Liquid nitrogen or liquid carbon dioxide is used to freeze the tissue. Also called cryosurgery and cryosurgical ablation.

Cryosurgery; drawing shows an instrument with a nozzle held over an abnormal area on the lower arm of a patient. Inset shows a spray of liquid nitrogen or liquid carbon dioxide coming from the nozzle and covering the abnormal lesion. Freezing destroys the lesion.

Procedimiento durante el cual se congela un tejido para destruir las células anormales. Generalmente, se realiza con un instrumento especial que contiene nitrógeno líquido o dióxido de carbono líquido para congelar el tejido. También se llama ablación crioquirúrgica y criocirugía.
