Ohio State's Comprehensive Cancer Center - James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute stands out once again for cancer care in the U.S. News & World Report "America's Best Hospitals" issue ranking among the top cancer programs in the country. The "America's Best Hospitals" issue, considered by many consumers and health care industry analysts as a leading indicator of quality care and performance, is compiled using data collected annually.

CEO Cancer Gold Standard Accreditation

OSUCCC - James is leading by example when it comes to promoting workplace wellness and encouraging healthier behavior. The CEO Roundtable on Cancer recently accredited Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center with the CEO Cancer Gold Standard™ recognizing their efforts to reduce the risk of cancer for their employees and covered family members by promoting healthy lifestyle choices, encouraging early detection through cancer screenings, and ensuring access to quality treatment.

'Best Doctors in America'

On the national Best Doctors Inc.'s "Best Doctors in America" list for 2011-2012, 87 percent are Ohio State faculty. A total of 483 out of 558 local physicians on the list practice either at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center's hospitals, Nationwide Children's Hospital, or as faculty members at other facilities. In fact, 65 more Ohio State-affiliated doctors made the list than last year.

Leapfrog's Top Hospitals List

For the third consecutive year and fourth time in five years, the Leapfrog Group named the OSUCCC - James among the safest and most effective hospitals in the country. The OSUCCC - James is among 65 United States hospitals and one of only two hospitals in Ohio named to the 2011 Leapfrog Top Hospitals list based upon a rating system that provides an up-to-the-minute assessment of hospital quality and safety. The Leapfrog Group is a consortium of "Fortune 500" companies that pay for the healthcare needs of an estimated 34 million Americans.

Medical Center Among Best Places to Work

For the third year in a row, OSU Wexner Medical Center has been named as a Best Place to Work in central Ohio by Business First. We were selected from 140 local companies who participated in the survey. Achieving this award is based solely on survey feedback from our own faculty and staff.

The James Recognized for Performance in 2007 UHC Palliative Care Project

Of the 44 hospitals participating in the University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC) project, The James is one of two hospitals receiving honorable mention for high performance in caring for patients who have serious or life-threatening diseases, also known as palliative care. After analyzing key performance measures of care in the study population, The James was recognized for its performance in UHC's Palliative Care Clinical Benchmarking project.  

Other Accolades and Achievements

  • The cancer program is one of only 41 in the country to be designated a comprehensive cancer center by the National Cancer Institute. In its 2010 renewal review, Ohio State's Comprehensive Cancer Center received the NCI's highest possible rating as "EXCEPTIONAL". In its review, the NCI stated that we "should serve as the model for other matrix university-based Centers".
  • The James is one of 10 freestanding cancer hospitals in the nation that comprise the Alliance of Dedicated Cancer Centers.
  • We're one of only seven centers in the nation to be awarded phase I and phase II clinical trials funding from the National Cancer Institute for the development of new therapeutic cancer drugs.

Ohio State Among Top 10 in Nation for Quality Care

The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is one of 10 academic medical centers in the nation delivering the highest quality of care based on results of a study commissioned by the University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC). In recognition, Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center is the recipient of the 2011 UHC Quality Leadership Award. The award is given to academic medical centers that demonstrate excellence in delivering high-quality care as measured by a Quality & Accountability Study, which UHC has commissioned annually since 2005. Ohio State ranked 9th nationwide in the 2011 survey.


Becker's Hosptial Review 100 Hospitals and Health Systems With Great Oncology Programs

These hospitals have been recognized for excellence in this specialty by reputable healthcare rating resources, including U.S. News & World Report, Thomson Reuters, the National Cancer Institute, the American College of Surgeons, the American Nurses Credentialing Center and CareChex. Each organization has demonstrated a focus on patient-centered cancer care and emphasis on continual innovation in treatments and services. 

The Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute is the adult patient care component of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center. Known as "The James," the center is one of the only freestanding cancer hospitals in the Midwest and one of seven centers in the country funded by the National Cancer Institute to conduct Phase I and Phase II clinical trials for new anti-cancer drugs.
