Cancer Diagnostic Center at The OSUCCC - James: expedited testing for a precise cancer diagnosis

If you suspect that you may have cancer, you want answers quickly. The James Cancer Diagnostic Center can provide you with direct, expedited access to diagnostic testing. An early diagnosis is the key to successful treatment; therefore, our diagnostic center is open for rapid access appointments.

The diagnostic center is staffed by experts at the OSUCCC – James who can provide you with a comprehensive evaluation to determine the appropriate diagnostic testing you might need so that an accurate diagnosis can be made. From the initial consultation, our experts will manage your entire diagnostic journey. This includes identifying and prioritizing your specific needs and then coordinating any testing you might need. If cancer is confirmed, our team will schedule you with the appropriate specialists based on your cancer type. If another illness is discovered, you will be referred for treatment within The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

Key information about The James Diagnostic Center

  • The Cancer Diagnostic Center is intended for patients who have a suspicion of cancer but have not gone through the diagnostic process.
  • You can refer yourself or be referred by a physician.
    • Before self-referring, you should check with your insurance company to ensure that the services will be covered. Every insurance plan is different; some will cover the services only if a doctor refers the patient.
  • Rapid access appointments are available virtually or in-person depending on your preference.
  • Only medicines needed for the diagnostic testing are prescribed by the center.

What to expect

  • Prior to your appointment, our diagnostic center scheduling team will request the results of any testing that has taken place.
  • At the first appointment, the diagnostic team will meet with you to discuss the next steps in the diagnostic journey, including tests that will be scheduled to determine if you have cancer and, if so, the type of cancer it is.
  • If a cancer diagnosis is confirmed, the team will schedule you with the appropriate oncology team at The James.
  • If you do not have cancer, the team will work with you on any necessary next steps you may need to take.

Comprehensive services provided

The center offers these services:

  • Diagnostic testing (CT scan, MRI scan, ultrasound)
  • Blood tests and lab tests
  • Biopsy (removal of a small amount of tissue) to be examined under a microscope
  • Referral to specialists
