2013 Champions

On April 10, 2013, we celebrated the 14th annual Stefanie's Champions awards luncheon in the beautiful Archie Griffin Grand Ballroom at the Ohio Union. Event Chair Chris Spielman, along with Honorary Chairs Urban and Shelley Meyer, honored five outstanding Champions in the lives of cancer survivors and presented this year's Champion of Hope award to Shannon Peterson.

The 2013 honored Champions are:

  • Dennis N. McFadden, Riverlea, Ohio, nominated by friend, Sherri Cooke
  • Kathy Peugh, Reynoldsburg, Ohio, nominated by mother-in-law, April Perkins
  • David Zartman, Worthington, Ohio, nominated by wife, Micki Zartman

2011 Champions

The 12th annual Stefanie’s Champions awards luncheon honored five extraordinary heroes on Wednesday, April 13, 2011. This year’s event took on a true Ohio State theme — scarlet, gray and pink — to pay tribute to the Champions in the lives of cancer survivors.

The 2011 honored Champions are:

  • Brittany Camburn, nominated by her mother, Jodi Pfeiffer
  • Alan Gallaway, nominated by his wife, Marilyn Gallaway
  • Christina Gehrisch, nominated by her friend, Chloe Hammond
  • Justin Milam, nominated by his wife, Chantil Milam
  • Faith Potter, nominated by her grandmother, Deborah Yothers

2010 Champions

The 11th annual Stefanie’s Champions celebration honored five extraordinary heroes in the lives of cancer patients during a luncheon at the Greater Columbus Convention Center’s grand ballroom on Tuesday, April 13, 2010. The 2010 luncheon raised nearly $120,000 to benefit the Stefanie Spielman Patient Assistance Fund and the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at the OSUCCC – James.

The 2010 honored Champions are:

  • Brian Altenburger, nominated by his wife, Michele Altenburger, a breast cancer survivor
  • Mary Elizabeth (Betsey) Cowardin, nominated by her daughter, Claire Mahoney, a thyroid cancer survivor
  • Larry Hughes, nominated by his wife, Marti Hughes, an ovarian cancer survivor
  • Trixie L. Hyser, nominated by her daughter, Lisa K. Baluk, a breast cancer survivor
  • Barbara Knapic, nominated by her friend, Suzanne Kaszar, a lymphoma survivor

2009 Champions

The tenth anniversary of Stefanie’s Champions was held on Wednesday, April 15, honoring another six special heroes in the lives of cancer patients during a luncheon award ceremony at the Greater Columbus Convention Center’s grand ballroom. Approximately 700 people attended the luncheon ceremony.

More than 800 people attended the ninth annual Stefanie’s Champions awards luncheon on April 23, 2008, to see the spotlight shine on unsung heroes in the lives of cancer survivors.

More than 850 people attended the eighth annual Stefanie’s Champions awards luncheon to see the spotlight shine on six unsung heroes in the lives of cancer survivors.

Six unsung heroes in the lives of patients with cancer were honored at the seventh annual Stefanie's Champions awards luncheon held on April 19, 2006.

Recipients of the 2005 Champion award were honored at a special luncheon hosted by Stefanie and Chris at the Greater Columbus Convention Center on April 20, 2005.

Eight unsung heroes in the lives of cancer patients were honored at the fifth annual Stefanie’s Champions luncheon April 28, 2004, at the Ohio Convention Center in Columbus.
