Leading cancer genetics experts from The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute available to provide perspective on research presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Human Genetics and the International Congress of Human Genetics
 
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Cancer genetics experts at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC-James), are available for outside comment on research presented during the American Society of Human Genetics annual meeting and the International Congress of Human Genetics, both to be held Oct. 11-15 in Montreal.
 
·        Heather Hampel, a cancer genetic counselor at (OSUCCC – James) is the immediate past president of the American Board of Genetic Counseling. She provides genetic counseling for patients at high risk for hereditary cancer syndromes, including breast-ovarian cancer syndrome, Lynch syndrome (a predisposition to colorectal and endometrial cancers) and familial adenomatous polyposis. Hampel, who is clinical associate director of the Division of Human Genetics at The Ohio State University Medical Center, also coordinates research studies to identify novel cancer susceptibility genes. The American Board of Genetic Counseling is the credentialing organization for the genetic counseling profession in North America, providing certification and recertification of qualified professionals.
 
·        Rebecca Nagy, a certified genetic counselor and researcher at (OSUCCC – James), has been elected president of the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC). She will serve as president-elect starting Jan. 1, and assume the presidency for one year effective Jan. 1, 2013. NSGC represents more than 2,300 masters-level health professionals and advances the roles of genetic counselors in health care by fostering education, research and public policy to ensure the availability of quality genetic services.
 
·        Rob Pilarski, a certified genetic counselor and researcher at OSUCCC – James), focuses on clinical and translational aspects of cancer genetics. He has a long history of professional involvement with the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC), including roles on the Board of Directors and numerous standing and ad hoc committees. He is also a founding co-director and ongoing active member of the NSGC's Cancer Genetics Special Interest Group, and has coordinated their online directory of genetic research studies since 1998.
