COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State University cancer researcher, Electra Paskett, has been awarded a grant from the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) at the organization’s awards luncheon this week in New York City.
This is the 11th consecutive BCRF award for Paskett, who is the associate director for population sciences at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC-James), and holds the Marion N. Rowley Chair in Cancer Research at Ohio State.
Paskett’s BCRF awards totaling nearly $2.5 million have supported her research in cancer prevention, early detection, survivorship and disparities among different ethnic groups and social classes.
Currently, Paskett’s research includes examining the effects of diet, exercise and dietary compounds on the risk of cancer among women who are at risk of developing breast cancer and among breast cancer survivors.
The BCRF, founded in 1993 by Evelyn H. Lauder, is dedicated to funding innovative clinical and translational research in breast cancer. It has awarded $330 million for breast cancer research. This year, $36 million in grants will support 186 scientists worldwide.
The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute strives to create a cancer-free world by integrating scientific research with excellence in education and patient-centered care, a strategy that leads to better methods of prevention, detection and treatment. Ohio State is one of only 41 National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers and one of only seven centers funded by the NCI to conduct both phase I and phase II clinical trials. The NCI recently rated Ohio State’s cancer program as “exceptional,” the highest rating given by NCI survey teams. As the cancer program’s 210-bed adult patient-care component, The James is a “Top Hospital” as named by the Leapfrog Group and one of the top 20 cancer hospitals in the nation as ranked by U.S. News & World Report.
