COLUMBUS, Ohio – For the fourth consecutive year – and the fifth time in six years – the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC–James) has been named among the safest and most effective hospitals in the country, according to a national ranking from the Leapfrog Group.

The James is among 92 hospitals from a field of almost 1,200 to be named 2012 Leapfrog Top Hospitals based upon a rating system that provides an up-to-the-minute assessment of a hospital’s quality and safety.

“We are honored that Leapfrog has once again selected the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute as one of the elite hospitals nationwide based on our superior level of performance on quality and safety measures,” says Dr. Michael Caligiuri, director of the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center and CEO of the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute. “To earn this distinction for four years in a row is a testament to our commitment to providing a high quality of patient care and safety as we work together to achieve our ultimate goal of creating a cancer-free world.”

The 2012 list, announced today during Leapfrog’s Annual Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland, includes university and other teaching hospitals, children’s hospitals and community hospitals in rural, suburban and urban settings. A complete list of 2012 Leapfrog Top Hospitals can be viewed at www.leapfroggroup.org. The Leapfrog Group is a consortium of about 150 Fortune 500 companies that pay for health care needs of an estimated 37 million Americans.

“By achieving the Top Hospital accolade, the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute has demonstrated exemplary performance across all areas of quality and patient safety that are analyzed on the Leapfrog Hospital Survey. This hospital stands out as one consistently providing safe, high quality care, and I would be comfortable sending my family to there for care,” said Leah Binder, President & CEO of The Leapfrog Group.

The Leapfrog Hospital Survey, which launched in 2001, is the only voluntary effort of its kind. It focuses on four critical areas of patient safety: the use of computer physician order entry to prevent medication errors; standards for doing high-risk procedures; protocols and policies to reduce medical errors and other safe practices recommended by the National Quality Forum; and adequate nurse and physician staffing.
In addition, hospitals are measured on their progress in preventing infections and other hospital-acquired conditions and adopting policies on the handling of serious medical errors.
“The Leapfrog Top Hospital distinction is by far the most competitive award a hospital can receive. Leapfrog holds hospitals to the highest standards on behalf of our purchaser members and their employees,” added Binder.

The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute strives to create a cancer-free world by integrating scientific research with excellence in education and patient-centered care, a strategy that leads to better methods of prevention, detection and treatment. Ohio State is one of only 41 National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers and one of only seven centers funded by the NCI to conduct both phase I and phase II clinical trials. The NCI recently rated Ohio State’s cancer program as “exceptional,” the highest rating given by NCI survey teams. As the cancer program’s 228-bed adult patient-care component, The James is a “Top Hospital” as named by the Leapfrog Group and one of the top 20 cancer hospitals in the nation as ranked by U.S. News & World Report.
