COLUMBUS, Ohio – For the third consecutive year and fourth time in five years, the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC–James) has been named among the safest and most effective hospitals in the country, according to a national ranking from the Leapfrog Group.

The James is among 65 hospitals from a field of almost 1,200 to be named 2011 Leapfrog Top Hospitals based upon a rating system that provides an up-to-the-minute assessment of a hospital’s quality and safety. The James is among 52 adult, 3 rural and 10 children’s hospitals on the list, and one of only two freestanding cancer hospitals to be honored. In Ohio, three adult and two children’s hospitals made the list.

“We are honored that Leapfrog has selected us once again as one of the elite hospitals nationwide based on our superior level of performance on quality and safety measures,” says Dr. Michael Caligiuri, director of the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center and CEO of the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute. “To earn this distinction for three years in a row is a testament to our laser-focus on providing a high quality of patient care and safety as we work together to create a cancer-free world.”

The 2011 list, announced today during Leapfrog’s Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., includes university and other teaching hospitals, children’s hospitals and community hospitals in rural, suburban and urban settings. A complete list of 2011 Leapfrog Top Hospitals can be viewed at www.leapfroggroup.org. The Leapfrog Group is a consortium of about 150 Fortune 500 companies that pay for health care needs of an estimated 34 million Americans.

The Leapfrog Group is a coalition of public and private purchasers of employee health coverage founded a decade ago to work for improvements in health care safety, quality and affordability.

The Leapfrog Hospital Survey, which launched in 2001, is the only voluntary effort of its kind. It focuses on four critical areas of patient safety: the use of computer physician order entry to prevent medication errors; standards for doing high-risk procedures; protocols and policies to reduce medical errors and other safe practices recommended by the National Quality Forum; and adequate nurse and physician staffing.

In addition, hospitals are measured on their progress in preventing infections and other hospital-acquired conditions and adopting policies on the handling of serious medical errors.

“For the third year in a row, James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute has achieved the highest distinction for quality and patient safety that any hospital in American can achieve,” said Leah Binder, Leapfrog CEO.

“We are proud to count them among the select group of 2011 Leapfrog Top Hospitals honored today in Washington. As the demand for information about hospital quality grows, hospitals like the James that participate in Leapfrog’s annual hospital survey are providing a great service to their community by making important information readily available,” said Binder.

The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute strives to create a cancer-free world by integrating scientific research with excellence in education and patient-centered care, a strategy that leads to better methods of prevention, detection and treatment. Ohio State is one of only 41 National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers and one of only seven centers funded by the NCI to conduct both phase I and phase II clinical trials. The NCI recently rated Ohio State’s cancer program as “exceptional,” the highest rating given by NCI survey teams. As the cancer program’s 210-bed adult patient-care component, The James is a “Top Hospital” as named by the Leapfrog Group and one of the top 20 cancer hospitals in the nation as ranked by U.S. News & World Report.
