Annual Block Golf Tournament To Help Fund Expansion Project

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 28th Herbert J. Block Memorial Tournament benefiting The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute will take place at noon on Monday, Sept. 12, at Scioto Country Club, 2196 Riverside Drive.

The tournament honors the memory of Herbert J. Block, a prominent Columbus businessman, who died of colon cancer in 1981. Since then, the Block family has worked tirelessly on behalf of cancer research, an effort that gained even more momentum in 1998 when they lost their mother, Maxine, to cancer as well.

Robert Smith, ESPN analyst and former OSU and NFL standout, is the honorary chair.

The tournament has generated nearly $4 million to support cancer education and research at The James, including the establishment and support of the annual Herbert and Maxine Block Memorial Lectureship to acknowledge excellence in the field of oncology. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the construction of a new Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute. The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (cancer.osu.edu) strives to create a cancer-free world by integrating scientific research with excellence in education and patient-centered care, a strategy that leads to better methods of prevention, detection and treatment. Ohio State is one of only 41 National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers and one of only seven centers funded by the NCI to conduct both phase I and phase II clinical trials. The NCI recently rated Ohio State's cancer program as "exceptional," the highest rating given by NCI survey teams. As the cancer program's 210-bed adult patient-care component, The James is a "Top Hospital" as named by the Leapfrog Group and one of the top 20 cancer hospitals in the nation as ranked by U.S. News & World Report.
