Join the Conversation about Breast Reconstruction

October 12, 2012

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center is hosting a live, interactive webinar from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday (10/17) with breast reconstructive surgery experts and patients in honor of the nation's inaugural Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day that same day.

Participants will learn about the types of breast reconstruction and who is a candidate for this procedure. Virtual attendees will also hear patient testimonials and be able to ask specialists their questions.

Public participation is encouraged. There is no fee to take part in the webinar; however, registration is required at: www.surveymonkey.com/s/BRADayRegistration.
Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day is an initiative designed to promote education, awareness and access regarding post-mastectomy breast reconstruction. Singer and songwriter Jewel is the national spokesperson for the day and her song "Flower" was written to benefit breast reconstruction patients.

Seven out of 10 women eligible for breast reconstruction following cancer surgery are not being informed of their options, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. BRA Day was first launched in 2011 in Canada and will now occur annually on the third Wednesday of October. To learn more about national efforts, please visit bradayusa.org.

The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute strives to create a cancer-free world by integrating scientific research with excellence in education and patient-centered care, a strategy that leads to better methods of prevention, detection and treatment. Ohio State is one of only 41 National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers and one of only seven centers funded by the NCI to conduct both phase I and phase II clinical trials. The NCI recently rated Ohio State's cancer program as "exceptional," the highest rating given by NCI survey teams. As the cancer program's 210-bed adult patient-care component, The James is a "Top Hospital" as named by the Leapfrog Group and one of the top 20 cancer hospitals in the nation as ranked by U.S. News & World Report.
