May 26, 2011

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Foundation has awarded five grants as part of its first Young Investigator Awards Program.

Joanne Lester, a research scientist and oncology nurse practitioner at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute (OUSCCC – James) and a clinical assistant professor for the College of Nursing, is the only nurse to receive one of these grants.

Her study will examine how survivorship care planning affects the distress of leukemia and breast cancer survivors.

Awards focus on assessing and improving outcomes of cancer care, and carry grants of $150,000 over a two-year period.

The NCCN is a not-for-profit organization whose primary goal is to improve the quality, effectiveness, and efficiency of oncology practice so patients can live better lives. NCCN promotes the importance of continuous quality improvement and recognizes the significance of creating clinical practice guidelines appropriate for use by patients, clinicians, and other health care decision-makers. OSUCCC – James is a member of the NCCN.

The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (cancer.osu.edu) is one of only 40 Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States designated by the National Cancer Institute. Ranked by U.S. News & World Report among the top cancer hospitals in the nation, The James is the 205-bed adult patient-care component of the cancer program at The Ohio State University. The OSUCCC – James is one of only seven centers in the country funded by the NCI to conduct both phase I and phase II clinical trials.
