Media Advisory: The James To Celebrate 'Cancer Survivors Day' on Sunday

September 28, 2012

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Thousands of cancer survivors and their families will be swaying to the music, and listening to inspirational speakers when they gather on the lawn of Chemical Abstracts Services, 2540 Olentangy River Road from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday (9/30) to celebrate the 24th annual Cancer Survivors Day.

Media are invited to cover the invitation-only celebration sponsored by the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James).

The free event will feature comments by Dr. Michael Caligiuri, CEO of The James and director of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Susan Brown, chief nursing officer of OSUCCC – James. The event will also include a survivorship expo, live entertainment that includes a brass musical group, a choir of cancer survivors and a drumming circle demonstration, as well as refreshments and an interactive game tent.

The event’s featured speaker will be Chris Spielman, an Ohio State and pro football legend who has helped raise more than $10 million for The James through the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research. Spielman will be signing his book “That’s Why I’m Here,” as well as speaking to the public about his wife’s 11-year battle against breast cancer.

Each year, hospitals and medical centers nationwide celebrate Cancer Survivors Day to honor the 12 million Americans who have been cured or who are recovering from cancer. Adults living in the United States have about a 1 in 3 lifetime risk of developing cancer.

The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (cancer.osu.edu) strives to create a cancer-free world by integrating scientific research with excellence in education and patient-centered care, a strategy that leads to better methods of prevention, detection and treatment. Ohio State is one of only 41 National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers and one of only seven centers funded by the NCI to conduct both phase I and phase II clinical trials. The NCI recently rated Ohio State’s cancer program as “exceptional,” the highest rating given by NCI survey teams. As the cancer program’s 210-bed adult patient-care component, The James is a “Top Hospital” as named by the Leapfrog Group and one of the top cancer hospitals in the nation as ranked by U.S. News & World Report.
