COLUMBUS, Ohio – Cancer patients seeking to connect with others facing similar challenges are invited to join a new social media network called CancerConnect that will allow them and their caregivers to share information, inspiration, hope, and support.
The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James) is partnering with OMNI Health Media to launch The James CancerConnect to bring together cancer patients, caregivers and others in a welcoming and informative online community.
The free site – which offers participants the opportunity to read informational materials and communicate with others – is open to anyone who registers with a user name and password. Members of The James CancerConnect community are invited to participate in more than 60 disease-specific online national communities for individuals with similar interests at cancerconnect.com/thejames.
Cancer-specific groups are available – as well as groups focused on caregiving, health and wellness, clinical trials, insurance, nutrition, and survivorship – to provide support for those affected by cancer.
“We know that it is vitally important for cancer patients to reach out to others for comfort and support during and after their treatment,” says Dr. Michael Caligiuri, director of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center and CEO of the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute.
“The James CancerConnect community allows members to voice their ideas, thoughts, and concerns while benefiting from the experience of others. Cancer survivors who have already completed treatment can, in essence, be mentors for those whose treatment journey is just beginning.” adds Caligiuri.
Other online communities managed by OMNI Health Media include Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, N.Y., Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville, Tenn.; Seattle Cancer Care Alliance in Seattle, and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. OMNI Health Media is a leading specialty publisher of cancer-related information, websites, and content specifically for consumers.
The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute strives to create a cancer-free world by integrating scientific research with excellence in education and patient-centered care, a strategy that leads to better methods of prevention, detection and treatment. Ohio State is one of only 41 National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers and one of only seven centers funded by the NCI to conduct both phase I and phase II clinical trials. The NCI recently rated Ohio State’s cancer program as “exceptional,” the highest rating given by NCI survey teams. As the cancer program’s 210-bed adult patient-care component, The James is a “Top Hospital” as named by the Leapfrog Group and one of the top cancer hospitals in the nation as ranked by U.S. News & World Report.
