The James, Kroger and City Hall Team Up To Turn Central Ohio Pink

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC–James), The Kroger Company Columbus Division and Columbus City Hall have teamed up to Shed Light on the Fight Against Breast Cancer during Breast Cancer Awareness Month by turning the town pink – beginning 6 p.m. Oct. 3 when Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman will give the signal to light up Columbus City Hall in pink to kick off a citywide “pink-out.”

The James and Kroger created the “Shed the Light” campaign to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research. The campaign encourages central Ohioans to join The James and Kroger in lighting up the exterior of their homes and businesses by Oct, 24 with pink, energy-saving CFL light bulbs that can be purchased for $5 at any Ohio Kroger store. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the light bulbs will benefit the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at The James.

“The ‘Shed the Light’ campaign is designed to bring home – literally – the importance of preventing, detecting, treating and eventually curing breast cancer,” said Dr. William Farrar, breast surgical oncologist and director of the JamesCare Comprehensive Breast Center.

“If those pink porch lights help remind even one extra person about the importance of breast cancer research and to get a mammogram,” said Dr. Michael Caligiuri, director of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center and CEO of the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, “then we believe this is a campaign worth celebrating.”

The promotion also provides an opportunity to educate women that there is no such thing as a routine mammogram.

“At The James, we believe there is nothing routine about detecting breast cancer;” said Dr. Caligiuri. “Our breast radiologists spend all day, every day reading and interpreting only mammograms, and this is a very important distinction because their trained eyes can lead to early detection.”

“At Kroger, we believe in developing and maintaining strong local ties with the communities we are a part of,” said Bruce Macaulay, president, the Kroger Company Columbus Division, “so working with The James on this awareness promotion is yet another way we can demonstrate our commitment not only to our community, but also to our community’s health.”

According to American Cancer Society guidelines, monthly self breast exams, a physical breast exam by a physician and annual mammograms after age 40 are key to helping detect breast cancer as early as possible.

Mammograms are available at the new JamesCare Comprehensive Breast Center, 1145 Olentangy River Rd., as well as at other James central Ohio mammography services locations and The James’ Mobile Mammography Unit. Each OSUCCC-James mammography services location as well as the Mobile Mammography Unit provide the latest in digital mammography technology, are accredited by the American College of Radiology and certified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. In addition, registered, licensed mammography experts administer the screenings.
