October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and several events and promotions took place throughout the community this year, many of which benefited the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at the OSUCCC – James. Listed below are some of the activities and events that were scheduled.

BUCKEYES GO PINK GAME - OCTOBER 18
Buckeye Nation "went pink” on Saturday, Oct. 18, for Ohio State’s football game against Rutgers.
Participants turned Ohio Stadium pink by:
- Wearing pink accessories
- Arriving early to receive a pink rally item
National Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day (BRA Day)
In honor of National Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day (BRA Day), Ohio State’s Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute recognized the many faces of breast cancer and the unique journey of every person facing a breast cancer diagnosis. Participants showed us BRAve Faces by posting to Twitter or Instagram using #OSUBraveFace and sharing their stories.
HOPE’S BOUTIQUE: ANNIVERSARY OPEN HOUSE AND SALE
An open house to celebrate the 16th anniversary of Hope’s Boutique, a specialty shop at 1145 Olentangy River Road that caters to women with cancer, took place on Friday, Oct. 17, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Visitors that day enjoyed: makeovers with our makeup artist, Michele Rees; a private fitting with company representatives for the latest mastectomy bras and silicone breast prostheses; 35% off all gift items, hats, swimsuits and more; and our bra free zone: comfortable fashions with a built-in shelf bra for your active and leisure needs. For those who couldn't make it to the open house, shoppers still received 25% off merchandise from the shop throughout October.
SUNNY 95 "PINK WITH A PURPOSE"
Sunny 95 radio and The James encouraged central Ohio women to attend one of 6 one-hour appearances at varying locations around Columbus, including Macy’s at Easton, to schedule their mammogram. As a thank-you for scheduling, patients received a $20 Macy’s gift card at the event and a $20 Polaris gift card at the time of their mammogram. Macy’s and Polaris Grill donated the gift cards for this promotion. Also at these appearances, people were encouraged to sign a pink tag in honor or memory of a loved one or friend touched by breast cancer.
How did you take action in October?
It only takes one person to start a movement. Chris Spielman, former Ohio State and NFL football great and co-founder of the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research kick-started this movement by matching all donations
made to the Spielman Fund (up to $10,000) during the month of October.

.GO PINK WITH KROGER THIS MONTH
The Kroger Company again supported the Spielman Fund. Each October, Kroger holds a Pink Ribbon campaign in stores during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. During the campaign, shoppers may purchase a pink ribbon for $1 that goes to supporting breast cancer research at the OSUCCC – James. In addition, Kroger helps to highlight merchandise from manufacturers that donate a portion of proceeds to breast cancer causes. Customers can easily identify those items on store shelves during Breast Cancer Awareness Month thanks to Kroger’s specialty tags.CHERYL’S COOKIES PINK RIBBON COOKIE CARD
A delightful cookie card included a wrapped Cheryl's buttercream frosted heart shaped cut-out cookie tucked inside a cheerful gift box. For each gift sold, approximately 10% of the purchase price (excluding tax) benefited the Spielman Fund. Each box included a $5 Reward Card to use on a future purchase. PINK BAGELS AT PANERA
Pink was Empowerment in October at Panera Bread! A portion of the proceeds from every Pink Ribbon Bagel sold during the month of October benefited the Spielman Fund! A SWEET TREAT FROM DONATOS
