October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and several events and promotions have been planned throughout the community this year, many of which benefit the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at the OSUCCC – James. Listed below are some of the activities and events that are scheduled.

2013 BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH ACTIVITIES
BREAST HEALTH SUMMIT
for Life is hosting a day-long conference on October 12 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. for breast cancer survivors and their families, featuring a key note presentation from breast cancer survivor and author Regina Brett. Conference topics will include nutrition, genetics, exercise and fatigue, sexuality and body image and much more. To register, visit cancer.osu.edu/go/support
BREAST RECONSTRUCTION AWARENESS (BRA) DAY
In honor of National Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day, The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute is excited to bring you a live Q&A with breast cancer experts and a survivor. We’ll talk with the experts about how various resources within the hospital are used to make the reconstruction process as easy and beneficial to the patient as possible. We’ll also answer any questions you have about the breast reconstruction experience at the OSUCCC – James. Be sure to RSVP for the event.

BUCKEYES GO PINK GAME - OCTOBER 26
Buckeye Nation will “go pink” on Saturday, Oct. 26, for Ohio State’s football game against Penn State. Among adornments in the stadium will be:
- James-branded pink spirit towels distributed to fans at the gates before the game
- Pink goal posts
- Sidewalk graphics around the stadium
- Pink ribbon stickers on players’ helmets
- Pink ribbon lapel pins for the Red Coats and coaches
- Pink accents on cheerleaders and Brutus
- Pinked-out tailgates sponsored by Kroger
- A halftime show with a check presentation from Buckeye Cruise for Cancer to the Meyer Fund and Spielman Fund
- Digital board messages throughout the game
- Pink fireworkds
Promotions outside the stadium will include:
- A James banner on St. John Arena
- Pink-lit buildings, including the new James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, the Schottenstein Center, Ohio Stadium and the Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center
- Social media and internal campaigns
- Sidewalk graphics in Fan Fest on game day (Oct. 26)
- A James booth in Fan Fest on game day (Oct. 26)
- Pre-game physician interviews on 97.1 The Fan radio (Oct. 26)
You can assist with these efforts by: wearing pink to the Penn State game; come early to the game to receive your pink towl and special giveaway from Kroger; “pinking out” your tailgate parties by visiting Kroger and stocking up on pink foods and decorations; and visiting The James booth at Fan Fest.
CASTO SHOPPING CENTERS
Nine shopping centers owned and/or managed by Casto have been donated for the OSUCCC – James’ breast cancer marketing campaign. If you see any of the installations, please snap a photo and post it on your Facebook page.
Through October, Donatos Columbus stores will donate a portion of sales from all LARGE, FULL-PRICED pizzas to the Spielman Fund. Donatos large pizza boxes will be pink and will include information about scheduling mammograms at the OSUCCC – James. Everyone is encouraged to order Donatos large, full-priced pizzas during the campaign for family and work events.
PANERA BREAK BAKERY-CAFES
During the month of October, all central Ohio Panera Bread bakery-cafes will be supporting the cause with pink ribbon bagels. A portion of the proceeds from every bagel sold will benefit the Spielman Fund. Bagels can also be pre-ordered for group events, staff meetings or parites. Everyone is encouraged to stop by Panera and pick up pink ribbon bagels during the campaign for family and work events.
Kroger stores will hold a month-long campaign in which, for a $1 donation to the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at the OSUCCC – James, patrons can sign a pink ribbon in honor or memory of a loved one or friend touched by breast cancer. The store will also sell pink foods and decorations.
HOPE’S BOUTIQUE: ANNIVERSARY OPEN HOUSE AND SALE
An open house to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Hope’s Boutique, a specialty shop at 1145 Olentangy River Road that caters to women with cancer, is set for Thursday, Oct. 17, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Visitors that day can enjoy: a complimentary massage or facial massage; a private fitting with company representatives offering the latest mastectomy bras and silicone breast prostheses; and 35 percent off all gift items, hats, swimsuits and more. (Appointments are required for the massage and prostheses fittings; call 293-9393 to schedule.) If you can’t make it to the open house, you can still get 25 percent off merchandise from the shop throughout October.
SPIELMAN GRIDIRON CLASSIC
In September and October, high schools throughout Ohio are raising funds and awareness for The James and the Spielman Fund in a series of football games. The games showcase the teams and create community awareness for both the Spielman Fund and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Chris Spielman will visit the school that raises the most money to host an inspirational school assembly. The James is participating by helping the schools turn their stadiums pink with pink glow sticks and banners.
SUNNY 95 "PINK WITH A PURPOSE"
Sunny 95 radio and The James are encouraging central Ohio women to attend one of 6 two-hour appearances at shopping centers around Columbus, including Macy’s at Easton, to schedule their mammogram on-site. As a thank-you for scheduling, patients will receive a $25 Macy’s gift card at the time of their mammogram. Macy’s is donating the gift cards for this promotion. Also at these appearances, people will be encouraged to sign a pink tag in honor or memory of a loved one or friend touched by breast cancer. The tags will be placed on the “Pink Tree of Hope” to be displayed at Sunny 95’s “Girls Night Out” in November at Macy’s at Easton.
TOWARD A CANCER-FREE WORLD 10TV SEGMENTS
All four October segments will feature a different breast cancer topic. Tune in every Thursday during the noon, 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. news broadcasts. A phone bank of breast cancer experts will answer viewers’ questions on Oct. 13 during the 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. broadcasts.
