For women with breast cancer, there can be tremendous deformity to the breast that can add to the emotional distress caused by the cancer. The primary benefit of breast reconstruction is an improved overall quality of life for patients who have or will have a mastectomy.
Breast reconstruction is safe and does not interfere with other treatments or increase the risk of breast cancer recurrence.
What are the criteria for breast reconstructive surgery?
In general, all women undergoing a mastectomy are possible candidates for breast reconstruction. The type
of reconstruction used may depend on one’s body, cancer type, personal goals and need for other therapies. In addition, many women who are undergoing a lumpectomy may benefit from reconstructive breast surgery to minimize deformities that can occur.
When can breast reconstructive surgery take place?
By including reconstruction consultation as part of the treatment plan, the patient is educated and counseled early so she can make the decision about reconstruction prior to surgery. Based on the personal medical history of each patient, a recommendation will be made for either of the following:
- Immediate Reconstruction - initial reconstructive surgery performed at the same time as mastectomy.
- Delayed Reconstruction – reconstruction is performed after recovery from the mastectomy is complete. If radiation is part of the treatment protocol, the surgeon may recommend delayed reconstruction.
