Cell Therapy Lab Team Members:
The Cell Therapy Laboratory (CTL) is part of the Arthur G.James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute. The CTL processes, tests and stores stem cell and lymphocyte products for the adult Blood and Marrow Transplant Program at the James and the pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Program at Nationwide Children's Hospital. In addition, the CTL is involved in clinical trials involving different types of therapeutic cell products for various diseases, including pancreatic islet cells to treat type 1 diabestes mellitus.
Clinical Nurse Specialist
The clinical nurse specialist (CNS) will provide guidance, direction and assistance to the patient care staff to better care for your personalized needs.
Financial Counselor
The financial counselor will help you understand your insurance coverage and assist you with alternative financing and self pay issues. At consultation, patients will meet with a financial counselor to verify your third-party payer and to secure insurance approval for transplant.
Nurse Practitioners
The nurse practitioners work in collaboration with the medical staff to provide healthcare assessments, education and services to patients. Your nurse practitioner will perform health history interviews, physical examinations and some diagnostic procedures, such as bone marrow biopsies and aspirations, skin biopsies and lumbar punctures.
Patient Care Resource Manager
The patient care resource manager (PCRM) will serve as your primary discharge nurse. Your PCRM will facilitate that your discharge care needs are met by coordinating home care services, such as home health care, home infusion, prescriptions, supplies and follow-up appointments. While you are hospitalized, your PCRM will provide clinical updates to your insurance company.
Patient Coordinators
The patient coordinators are a key resource during the pre-transplant screening and preparatory processes. At consultation, patients and families will meet with their patient coordinator who will provide an in-depth overview of the transplant process and coordinate all your pre-transplant testing and admission /services at the direction of the attending physician.
Registered Nurses
The registered nurse (RN) will provide all patient direct and indirect nursing care. The RN will ensure all your nursing needs are met, including any patient and or caregiver education.
Research Nurses
The research nurse will determine a patient’s eligibility for enrollment in a clinical trial. If you are enrolled in a study, your research nurse will serve as a liaison between the protocol and your healthcare team. Your research nurse will collect data, monitor test results and provide you with necessary patient education.
Social Worker
The social worker will meet with patients and families to assess their psychosocial needs and provide emotional support, resource information and general education during the transplant process. Your social worker will address environmental concerns such as finances, housing and transportation and will assist with your discharge needs.

- Chaplain/Priest – Available upon request for your spiritual needs.
- Dietitian – Oversees your nutritional needs. Meets with you to discuss diet guidelines and nutritional services.
- Pharmacist – Oversees how your medications are prepared and given to you. Reviews your medication record daily.
- Physical Therapist – Evaluates your physical abilities and home-going needs. Develops, instructs and assists you with your exercise /activity plan.

- Patient Care Associate (PCA) – Acts as nurse’s aide in providing direct and indirect patient care activities.
- Patient Service Associate (PSA) – Provides indirect patient care activities, including patient transportation, maintenance and cleaning of patient care areas and equipment.
- Office Associate – Provides secretarial and supportive services for the outpatient unit (AMTU). Facilitates scheduling of medical tests, procedures and consultations, and obtains insurance pre-certification.
- Unit Clerical Associate (UCA) – Provides secretarial services for the inpatient Blood and Marrow Transplant Unit (BMTU).

Adminstrative Personnel:
- Administrative Director – Manages the operations of the BMT Program and staff. Responsible for the program’s long-term planning, contract management, regulatory compliance and billing.
- Nurse Manager – Oversees the nursing operations of the BMTU, AMTU and Apheresis units ensuring quality care is provided to patients.

Cell Therapy Lab Team Members:
- Medical Director – Responsible for all aspects of CTL activities relating to the care and safety of patients and donors. Ensures that cell products meet the medical needs of the patients.
- CTL Director – Oversees all operations of the CTL, ensuring that high quality cell products are manufactured in compliance with all applicable regulations. Oversees the development of new processing and testing procedures and works with investigators, pharmaceutical and biotech companies, regulatory agencies and study sponsors to implement innovative clinical trials involving cell therapies.
- CTL Supervisor – Responsible for daily operations of the CTL, ensuring that customer needs are met in a timely manner. Assists in the development of new processing and testing procedures. Serves as a technical expert for and supervises technical staff in processing, testing and development activities.
- Clinical Quality Program Manager – Oversees the quality assurance and improvement activities of the BMT Program and the CTL, including quality assessments, preventative actions and regulatory and accreditation compliance.
