Research Description

Michael D. Slater (Ph.D. Stanford University, 1988, MPA New York University, 1982, BA Columbia University, 1974) is Social and Behavioral Science Distinguished Professor at the School of Communication, Ohio State University, where he also is director of the Behavioral Measurement Shared Resource at the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center. He has served as principal investigator of NIH-funded studies of community-based substance abuse prevention efforts, alcohol-related risk perceptions and media coverage, and responses to alcohol advertisements and warnings (representing over $11 million in funded research grants) as well as conducting investigations of media coverage and cancer, and persuasion and media effects, with over 100 publications in these areas. In these capacities, he has overseen 4-wave cohort studies of thousands of adolescents in communities across the U.S., national telephone probability sample surveys of adults and adolescents, community-based and telephone recruitment of research participants, and field and laboratory experimental designs. He is a past chair of the Health Communication Division of the International Communication Association and served as founding chair of the Coalition for Health Communication.
