General Research Interest

Behavioral influences on endocrine and immune function, diet, and health

Research Description

Dr. Janice Kiecolt-Glaser’s work addresses behavioral influences on immune and endocrine function.  Her current projects address how stress and depression enhance inflammation, and how dietary and behavioral interventions may lower inflammation. For example, two of her current randomized control trials, one with medical student subjects and another with older adults, are testing the hypothesis that omega-3 supplementation can attenuate stress-related changes in inflammation and mood.  Other current studies address questions such as how genetic and environmental influences contribute to depression and immune dysregulation in older adults, the impact of major life stressors on the progression of basal cell carcinoma, the extent to which a yoga intervention can modulate endocrine and immune responses in breast cancer survivors, and the role that proinflammatory cytokines play in combination with depression among cancer survivors who experience debilitating fatigue.

Transinstitutional Work

My research program has broad interdisciplinary collaborative ties. My primary collaborator on the immunological side is Dr. Ronald Glaser, the Director of the Institute for Behavioral Medicine Research. Our studies have important endocrine components because of the interface between the endocrine immune systems, with expertise provided by Dr. William Malarkey, Department of Medicine.  Some of our newer studies address the intersection of stress/depression, diet, and immune function, conducted in collaboration with Dr. Martha Belury, Department of Human Nutrition. Our collaborations with Dr. Charles Shapiro and Dr. Tanios Bekaii-Saab provide expertise in cancer biology related to breast and colorectal cancers. Dr. Stanley Lemeshow, the Dean of the College of Public Health, and Dr. David Murray, Director of the Division of Epidemiology in the College of Public Health, provide essential biostatistical expertise. Dr. Charles Emery in the Department of Psychology, College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, is a valued collaborator with expertise in exercise interventions. Dr. Dan Birmingham, Department of Medicine, has provided critical genetic expertise for studies with older adults. Trans--institutional collaborations include Dr. Catherine Alfano in the Office of Cancer Survivorship, National Cancer Institute.
