Research Description

Thomas Rosol, DVM, PhD is a veterinary pathologist in the Department of Veterinary Biosciences. The Rosol Laboratory is NCI and NCRR-funded to develop mouse models of human cancer with emphasis on bone metastasis, bone resorption and formation, and cancer-associated hypercalcemia. The molecular regulation of parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) is studied in vitro and in vivo using animal models of prostate, lung, breast, and head & neck cancer, and lymphoma and PTHrP knockout mice. Both breast and prostate cancer metastasize to bone in humans, but breast cancer typically induces osteolytic disease and prostate cancer typically induces osteoblastic metastases. The Rosol laboratory has developed mouse models of breast and prostate cancer that mimic the metastases in humans and are used to investigate the pathogenesis and treatment of metastasis. Models of metastasis include intracardiac, intratibial, and orthotopic injections of tumor cells. Laboratory personnel include the PI, assistant professors, research scientist, post-professional PhD students, and undergraduate students. Laboratory expertise has been developed for in vivo imaging of cancer in mouse models using bioluminescence from luciferase-transduced cancer cells. The lab is also collaborating to examine the ability of nanoparticles to enhance the ultrasound imaging of cancer molecular markers.
