General Research Interest

Breast cancer, intraoperative tumor-specific detection and imaging technology

Research Description

Dr. Stephen P. Povoski is an Associate Professor of Surgery in the Division of Surgical Oncology of the Department of Surgery at The Ohio State University and is the Director of the High Risk and Breast Cancer Prevention Program at the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute. His current clinic and research interests include many diverse aspects of breast cancer, including sentinel lymph node mapping and biopsy technology, developing innovative intraoperative tumor-specific detection and imaging technology, developing and refining innovative breast imaging technology, and image-guided minimally-invasive breast biopsy technology. He is well-published within several arenas of surgical oncology, including sentinel lymph node mapping and biopsy technology, minimally-invasive breast biopsy technology, perioperative and intraoperative use of 18F-FDG imaging and detection technology, utilization of venous cutdown techniques (cephalic vein and external jugular vein) for chronic indwelling central venous access device placement, utilization of stapling devices for pancreatic surgery, and the evaluation of the utility of preoperative biliary decompression of jaundice caused by pancreatic and peripancreatic malignancies. He is currently the Deputy Editor of the World Journal of Surgical Oncology.
