General Research Interest
Dr. William's research is focused on the role(s) that a protein, deoxyuridine triphosphate nucleotidohydrolases (dUTPase) encoded by the human herpesviruses and some retroviruses has in the pathophysiology of disease. Research Description
Several viruses including Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8) encode for a deoxyuridine triphosphate nucleotidohydrolases (dUTPase). We have demonstrated that these herpesvirus encoded dUTPase as well as a human retrovirus encoded dUTPase possess novel properties, independent of their enzymatic activities, that alter the immune response (innate and adaptive). Our studies are focused on how the virus encoded dUTPases alter the tumor microenvironment promoting the growth/survival of tumor cells latently infected by these viruses.
