General Research Interest

Immunopathogenesis of feline leukemia virus and feline immunodeficiency virus

Research Description

Dr. Mathes has research projects in two areas. First, to determine the role of thymic homeostasis on antiviral immunity in cats infected with FIV. T cell function against virus and recall antigen responses are being monitored in thymectomized and mock thymectomized FIV infected cats. Shifts in T cell subset is being documented with particular attention focused on T regulator cells. The second area of study is modulation antiviral drug resistance that occurs during FIV infection.
