The Comparative Pathology and Mouse Phenotyping Shared Resource (CPMPSR) provides expert, affordable, experimental pathology support to The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center members who utilize animal models to study human disease.

The CPMPSR comparative pathologists are experts in normal anatomy, physiology and histology as well as background age- and strain-/breed-related lesions, infectious pathogens and husbandry practices for various animal model species.  Lesion recognition and interpretation within individual investigations provides a critical component to research that incorporates animal models.

Services include comprehensive macroscopic and microscopic examinations of various species of laboratory animals with an emphasis on the phenotypic characterization of newly produced lines of genetically engineered mice, including embryos, as well as preclinical efficacy and toxicity studies. Additional and expanded services offered by the CPMRSR include hematology; clinical chemistry; radiography; routine frozen, paraffin and plastic slide preparation; tissue microarray preparation; special histochemical and immunohistochemical staining; Aperio whole histology slide scanning and quantitative image analysis; and, processing of tissue samples for transmission electron microscopy. The CPMPSR also serves as a referral service to experienced scientists within the OSU research community, providing expertise in animal model development, experimental design, optimal sample collection, and data interpretation.
