Chris Spielman was a high school and Ohio State football legend and four-time Pro Bowl linebacker, but he didn't tackle his toughest opponent until his playing career was almost over when his wife Stefanie was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Rather than focus on the diagnosis, Stefanie and Chris set out to raise awareness for breast cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute. Together they raised more than $9 million for breast cancer research and patient care. In October 2011, Ohio State announced the naming of The Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center, in honor of the Ohio State alumna, philanthropist and advocate.
In his book, That's Why I'm Here, Chris gives voice to his remarkable journey and cherished memories of his wife and their battle against breast cancer. Read the book or attend one of the events below to hear Chris trace his storied career, recall his courtship of Stefanie Belcher and their 11-year journey that brought joy and suffering to the Spielmans, as well as hope and inspiration to thousands of others through their unwavering commitment to fight breast cancer.
