The 2009 Herbert J. Block Memorial Tournament once again took a swing at cancer with the support of family and friends for a day of golf and camaraderie at Columbus Country Club. It was another successful year with over $200,000 raised for Ohio State’s Comprehensive Cancer Center - James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC-James).
Since its inception, the Block Memorial Tournament has raised more than $3.5 million for Ohio State’s cancer program. In 2009, the tournament proceeds benefited ProjectONE, the largest construction and renovation project in the history of the University. This expansion will include new cancer facilities for both inpatient and ambulatory.
The tournament day concluded with an awards reception with many sponsors, golfers and special guests joining the evening activities. Honorary Chair, Ohio State’s Assistant Football Coach Joe Daniels (shown above lining up his putt), shared his heartfelt story of living with cancer and his battles both on and off the field.
Of course, the day would not have been complete without the signature ball drop. Ball #472 was the winner for longtime tournament volunteer and supporter Anne Creek, who very generously donated her $2,000 winnings to the tournament.
The evening concluded with the announcement of the winners of the special challenge hole contests as well as the winning golf teams. A 1996 tournament champ, Rocky Geichman, joined teammates Rich Connolly, Mike Fultz, Henry Hauser and Phil London as 2009 Tournament Champions.
The OSUCCC-James and the Block family would like to thank all the sponsors, tournament players and volunteers who contributed their support so generously to make the 26th tournament a tremendous success. Together, we’re on course to finding a cure for cancer - thank you!
