It was a beautiful day on the golf course for the Herbert J. Block Memorial Tournament at Scioto Country Club on September 12, 2011. Now in its 28th year, tournament friends came together once again in the fight to ace cancer. This year, nearly $300,000 was raised to support Ohio State’s cancer program.
Since its inception, the Herbert J. Block Memorial Tournament has raised more than $4.1 million for Ohio State’s cancer program. In 2011 tournament proceeds once again benefited the construction of a new James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute opening in 2014.
Following a great day out on the links, golfers and tournament friends enjoyed a festive evening reception and awards ceremony. Medical Center leaders – Steve Gabbe, MD, Mike Caligiuri, MD and Dave Schuller, MD - spoke on the future of medicine through the medical center expansion as well as the groundbreaking cancer research taking place right here at Ohio State. Former Ohio State and Minnesota Vikings star running back, Robert Smith, served as the 2011 tournament Honorary Chair. Smith shared heartfelt remarks about the ways in which cancer has affected those close to him and about the importance of research and technology on our quest for a cure.
The Block Memorial Tournament would not have been complete without the signature ball drop. Longtime tournament friend, Mary Jo Heft, was this year’s winner, taking home $2,000 cash.
The evening concluded with the announcement of the winners of the skill contests as well as the top three golf teams. The Contract Lumber team, Jim Bieser, Jeff Tegtmeier, David Stafford, Carl Mollenkopf, and Tanner Murphy captured the 2011 tournament championship and were awarded the coveted champion jackets.
The OSUCCC-James and the Block family would like to thank all of the 2011 sponsors
, tournament players and volunteers who contributed their support so generously. We look forward to another successful tournament in 2012!
