To celebrate a major milestone in The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center expansion, a beam signing event was held on the Statehouse West Plaza on May 16. The beam is one of the final steel beams that will be raised and placed on top of the new James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute and Critical Care Center. The beam signifies the University's commitment to improving patient care and advancing education and research. Our expansion plays a significant role in creating a cancer-free world and building the future of medicine here in Ohio.
Since the groundbreaking in June 2010, continual progress has been made to ensure that key targets are met on time. This beam is a symbol that we're delivering on our promises to use capital purchases effectively and spur economic growth.
The expansion has stimulated job growth throughout our region, including almost 5,000 construction jobs, with nearly all the contracts awarded to Ohio-based firms. An estimated 6,000 full-time jobs will be created with the opening of the new hospital in 2014. We expect about 4,000 indirect, full-time jobs to be generated locally through Ohio State spending.
Further, we are using various sustainable and eco-friendly materials and technologies in the construction of our new hospital.
