And the Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center is the first of its kind in the Midwest, offering a full continuum of breast cancer care – from prevention and screening through detection, diagnosis, treatment and survivorship – all in one world-class facility.

At the Center, our internationally renowned breast cancer experts focus on preventing, detecting, treating and yes, curing, breast cancer by working together across numerous medical disciplines (medical, surgical and radiation oncologists; radiologists; pharmacists; reconstructive surgeons; pathologists and more) to design the very best treatment plan and therapies to target each patient’s specific breast cancer.

Care also includes meeting with numerous specialists across all breast cancer disciplines, all on the same day, all in one location, with all of your questions answered at one time.

From there, these experts work with you to create a comprehensive, individualized treatment plan that is designed solely for you, taking into account your specific kind of breast cancer as well as your unique biological makeup, genetics and individual medical history.

In fact, the Center’s close proximity to The Ohio State University and the OSUCCC – James offers access to the nation’s most advanced, sophisticated breast cancer clinical trials, and as a National Cancer Institute (NCI)–designated comprehensive cancer center, the OSUCCC – James offers patients access to novel therapies that may not be available anywhere else in the United States. That means that when additional treatment options are needed, patients can find that unparalleled level of expertise and access right here at the Center and The James.

The Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center is also accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). A coalition of professional organizations, the NAPBC works to provide the most efficient and contemporary breast care using scientific evidence about what works best for patients. The NAPBC monitors compliance to its standards at each accredited breast center. The NAPBC Board is composed of leadership from many medical disciplines and upholds nationally recognized quality performance measures for breast cancer treatment. It is administered by the American College of Surgeons (ACS), which for more than 100 years has led national and international initiatives to improve quality in hospitals.

Our name honors Stefanie Spielman: a wife, mother, advocate and alumna of The Ohio State University. Her breast cancer diagnosis inspired her to become a passionate advocate to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research. Stefanie’s legacy and her inspiring quest to help find a cure for breast cancer have come to life in with our breast cancer experts and in our innovative, world-class facility.

Their input led to the soothing, spa-like feel of the Center as well as the inclusion of private counseling suites, a resource center, a sanctuary, a café, free parking, free wireless Internet, support programming and massage therapy.

Research/Clinical Trials

The OSUCCC – James offers access to the nation’s most advanced, sophisticated breast cancer clinical trials. In fact, as a National Cancer Institute (NCI)–designated comprehensive cancer center, the OSUCCC – James offers patients access to novel therapies that may not be available anywhere else in the United States. That means that when additional treatment options are needed, patients can find that unparalleled level of expertise and access right here at The James and the Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center.

The James is one of only four U.S. cancer centers funded by the NCI to conduct phase I and phase II clinical trials. These trials go only to centers that demonstrate an exemplary capacity for research and clinical care, the expertise to deliver the latest in treatments and the infrastructure to interpret and track treatment results.

With more than 500 open clinical trials at any given time and some of the world’s latest discoveries available to patients right here in Columbus, Ohio, patients not only have access to more cancer clinical trials here than at nearly any other hospital in the region, but they also have access to some of the most advanced, targeted treatments and drugs available anywhere.

Additionally, Ohio State has nearly 300 cancer researchers dedicated to understanding what makes each patient’s cancer grow, move, spread or reoccur. Because of the OSUCCC – James’ NCI phase I and Phase II approvals, these experts can move research discoveries into clinical trials and make them available to patients sooner.

In addition to the many breast cancer clinical trials available here, the OSUCCC – James is also devoting significant research efforts to:

  • Treating triple-negative breast cancer, an aggressive subtype of the disease
  • Treating breast cancers that have not responded standard hormone therapy
  • Personalized treatments based on the genetic makeup of a patient’s tumor
  • Preventing breast cancer with omega-3 fatty acids

Services

Breast Imaging/Mammography

The breast cancer experts at the Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center use the latest digital screening and diagnostic mammography, breast ultrasound and breast MRI.

Additionally, the Breast Center is accredited by the American College of Radiology as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, and our internationally recognized breast radiologists are specialists in their field – reading and interpreting only breast images, all day, every day, making them super sub-specialists whose refined and detailed expertise can help detect even the most minute changes in breast tissue – and helping catch cancer at the earliest possible point, when chances for treatment and cure are best. he BICOE designation is awarded to breast imaging centers that achieve excellence by seeking and earning accreditation in all of the ACR’s voluntary breast imaging accreditation programs and modules, in addition to the mandatory Mammography Accreditation Program.

In addition to the Breast Center, The James has six other mammography locations as well as a state-of-the-art Mobile Mammography Unit.

Genetic Counseling

The Center’s on-site, highly experienced genetic counselors provide patients with pinpoint-accurate genetic testing as well as detailed risk assessment analysis to those concerned about their personal and family history of breast cancer.

High-Risk Breast Cancer Program

The Center’s specialists and sub-specialists provide women at high risk for breast cancer with the effective tools and guidance to manage their increased breast cancer risk with confidence.

Surgical Oncology

Certified by the American College of Surgeons – National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers for meeting stringent medical and surgical requirements, the Center is home to internationally renowned surgical oncologists, all of whom specialize in providing world-class breast cancer care.

Reconstructive Surgery

To ensure that patients have the most options, the Center’s experts include breast reconstruction counseling and planning (from selecting precise reconstruction techniques to microsurgery) as part of a patient’s treatment plan from the very beginning.

The OSUCCC – James is home to the largest and most experienced comprehensive breast reconstruction team in the Midwest and one of the best teams in the nation.

Hope’s Boutique

The first specialized shop of its kind in central Ohio, Hope’s Boutique helps women look and feel their best during and after treatment.

The knowledgeable, highly trained Boutique associates include certified, professional prosthetic fitters who are trained to listen carefully to each woman and to respond compassionately to every individual patient’s needs.

From stylish wigs to beautiful hats, specialized undergarments to trendy jewelry, Hope’s Boutique offers something beautiful for virtually everyone.

Oncology Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation during and after treatment can successfully help breast cancer patients manage certain treatment side effects and also improve physical functioning.

The Center’s experienced and knowledgeable physical therapists are LANA-certified in lymphedema treatment.

Medical Oncology

Our internationally recognized team of medical oncologists focus on preventing, detecting and treating breast cancer and improving the outcomes of breast cancer patients during andafter treatment.

Chemotherapy/Infusion Center

Based on input from our patients, the Breast Center offers private and semi-private treatment rooms.

Additionally, the infusion center features a state-of-the-art pharmacy staffed by pharmacy experts who dispense chemotherapy drugs and supportive care medications as well as experimental therapies for those participating in clinical trials.

Radiation Oncology

The Breast Center is home to internationally renowned radiation oncologists and the most advanced radiation technology available – the TrueBeam Linear Accelerators.

With this technology, our radiation oncologists can deliver precise radiation therapy – down to the millimeter.

Medication Assistance and Financial Counseling

A cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming. That’s why our highly trained patient advocates share their in-depth knowledge and expertise in health plans and benefits – helping patients and their families navigate through the complexities of insurance coverage and financial-assistance counseling.

Radiology/Imaging

Using the latest technology to ensure accurate diagnosis as well as to provide ongoing evaluations and follow-up scans, the Center’s breast cancer experts utilize the first MRI in the nation to combine high-field strength with technology specific to breast evaluation.

JamesCare for Life conveniently offers on-going programs and services to assist patients and families along their cancer journey. Programs and services include: patient and caregiver support groups, educational classes, expressive and creative arts, music and much more.
