One is reaching the $200 million milestone in the 11th year of Pelotonia, the annual grassroots cycling event that raises funds for cancer research at the OSUCCC – James. When this issue of Frontiers went to print, participants in Pelotonia 2019 had boosted the 11-year total to more than $203 million, a tally that continued to rise until fundraising ended on Oct. 4.
This year’s Pelotonia drew 7,484 riders in 338 individual pelotons (riding groups). The riders were from 39 U.S. states and 11 countries. Also participating were more than 3,300 virtual riders and over 3,000 volunteers. Team Buckeye, the official superpeloton of The Ohio State University, as of mid-September had 1,909 members, including 1,124 riders in 66 pelotons, approximately 441 virtual riders and 344 volunteers.
The other achievement is an announcement made on July 26 — just a week before the Aug. 2-4 Pelotonia 2019 weekend — that Pelotonia has pledged $102,265,000 over five years for the formation of the Pelotonia Institute for Immuno-Oncology (PIIO) at the OSUCCC – James. The largest portion of this pledge — $65 million — will fund the PIIO. Immuno-oncology, which harnesses the body’s immune system to fight cancer at all levels, from prevention to treatment and survivorship, is widely considered to be the next frontier in cancer prevention and treatment.
These achievements, perhaps more than ever, enabled Pelotonia participants past and present to sense the fruits of their labors in pursuit of their one goal to fund life-saving cancer research.
And thanks to Pelotonia’s key funding sponsors, every dollar raised by riders, virtual riders, volunteers and donors is used for cancer research at the OSUCCC – James.
