Rockin’ Out Cancer brought together music enthusiasts and supporters alike on Nov.10, 2012, at the LC Pavilion in the interest of fighting cancer while having a good time. They raised $15,000 for cancer research. Fans were entertained by The LoCash Cowboys along with several other musical acts to celebrate the heroes who have survived and the heroes who have lost the fight against cancer. Jersey Mike’s raised more than $28,000 during March to benefit the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at the OSUCCC – James through their Month of Giving campaign. Throughout March, customers could make donations at the register at any of the 14 local Jersey Mike’s locations. On March 27, 100 percent of the proceeds from lunch were donated to the Spielman Fund. Jersey Mike’s continued their support by donating boxed lunches to two other Community Partner golf outings supporting the OSUCCC – James.
Alpha Tau Omega’s annual Casino Night, held March 1 at the Ohio Union, was a big success, raising $35,000 to support cancer prevention efforts at the OSUCCC – James. For the past eight years, the members of Alpha Tau Omega have planned Ohio State’s largest Greek philanthropic event to support the Tressel Family Fund for Cancer Prevention Research. This year, Michael A. Caligiuri, MD, director of Ohio State’s Comprehensive Cancer Center and CEO of The James, addressed the crowd of supporters alongside former Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel.
Bowl for the Cure celebrated its 3rd annual bowling event to strike out breast cancer on April 6-7 at Sequoia Pro Bowl. The event featured two days of bowling by 135 teams to benefit the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at the OSUCCC – James. This year’s event brought the three-year fundraising total to more than $30,000. Organizers Chris and Paula Weatherman started the event in 2011 after Paula was diagnosed with breast cancer. They had both been in the bowling business for 21 years and knew they could bring a large group together to have fun and raise money for the Spielman Fund. “We are so grateful and amazed that the community has supported this event,” Chris says. “This year we had teams from West Virginia, Indiana, Cleveland, Dayton, Ashland and all of the communities surrounding Columbus.”
Jay Holdgreve, center, hosted another successful Bowling for the Boyz on March 23 in Delphos, Ohio. Proceeds from the 3rd annual bowling event benefited testicular cancer research at the OSUCCC – James through the Jay Holdgreve Endowment for Testicular Cancer Research. This year, more than $9,000 was raised through this event. “The support I have received from family, friends and strangers has been mind blowing. Even better is that men are talking about testicular cancer, and society is listening,” says Jay. Learn more at www.tcare.org.
The second annual Cocktails for a Cure took place on May 11 at Average Joe’s in Hilliard. The Hawaiian-themed event, which featured an evening of fun and sing-a-long entertainment with Chris Logsdon, raised $9,000 for cancer research at the OSUCCC – James. The Cesidia Cugini Benefit, held April 6 at Villa Milano, hosted more than 205 supporters for an Italian-style feast along with dancing, entertainment and a silent auction. The event raised $24,000 for lymphoma research, treatment and prevention at the OSUCCC – James. The evening honors the memory of Cesidia Cugini, who died of lymphoma in 2007.
