The OSUCCC – James Community Partners Program consists of corporations, individuals and community groups who raise funds in support of our mission to create a cancer-free world. From corporate initiatives to local events, our more than 400 Community Partners bring in significant dollars to further research, education and patient care at the OSUCCC – James. Congratulations to the volunteers and supporters of the Colon Cancer Golf Shoot-Out Scramble! This first-year golf outing, held on May 19 at the Granville Golf Course, rallied the local Granville community for a day of golf and fundraising. The event raised more than $5,700 for colon cancer support at The James! Kosta Morris, a 16-year-old member of the Granville High School golf team, was inspired to create the event after a friend’s parent was diagnosed. Amazing effort, Kosta and team!

Steps for Sarcoma celebrated its 3rd Annual walk on Sunday, Sept. 16, at Thompson Park in Upper Arlington, with its largest turnout — more than 615 participants. The group, which was joined by more than 70 dogs taking part in the walk, raised $35,000 for orthopedic sarcoma research at The James.

Courage, Conquer and Cure 5k held its inaugural event on Sept. 29 in historic downtown Canal Winchester for a whopping 705-plus race participants! The mayor of the city, along with Tracy Townsend of 10 TV and the Canal Winchester community, joined breast cancer survivors and event creators Jodi Brown and Angie Abel to fight cancer and enjoy a day of celebration. This first-year event had its beginning when Jodi and Angie connected after discovering they were both Canal Winchester residents, mothers and were both battling breast cancer. Together, with the support of the local community, this event raised more than $22,000 for the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research! Rock and Roll Over Brain Cancer held its 2nd Annual event at The Bogey Bar & Grill in Dublin, Ohio on Aug. 18. With more than 400 people in attendance and featuring several local bands, the event was a huge success and raised approximately $20,000! Mark your calendars for the 3rd Annual Rock and Roll Over Brain Cancer, planned for Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, at The Bogey Bar & Grill.

The Bobby V Melanoma Golf Outing was a first-year golf outing created by Robert Vanecko, a longtime employee of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center who passed away in June from advanced melanoma. Vanecko, along with friend Randy Meeks and supporters, put together the Bobby V Melanoma Golf Outing, held May 12 at Prairie View Golf Club in Indianapolis with family and friends. The outing raised more than $25,000 for melanoma research at The James with just one month of planning. Thomas Olencki, DO, Robert’s oncologist at the OSUCCC – James, along with Robert, wife Catherine, Randy and Jan Meeks, Robert’s supervisor Tom Caldwell and Katie Brennan, assistant director of Community Partners at the OSUCCC – James, celebrated Robert’s amazing success with a lunch and check presentation shortly before his passing on June 1. 

The 2nd Annual Nucor Steel Marion Reception and Golf Outing enjoyed another successful day of golfing to support The James Strategic Initiatives Fund, raising more than $32,000 during a private Casino Night and Golf Outing on June 6 and 7 in Marion, Ohio. Participants enjoyed a casino-inspired evening and reception followed by a beautiful day of golf at Oakhaven Golf Club. Thanks to the hard work of Nucor Steel Marion, Inc. and its suppliers.
