impactCancer Winter 2020

Welcome to the winter issue of impactCancer. Inside, we share a story about David, a survivor who is living a full life thanks to an Ohio State-developed drug that is now approved by the FDA.

We also offer a story about Jason, who passed away from complications related to acute leukemia. His mother, Sandy, has spent the past 11 years supporting research that has helped lead to a phase I clinical trial.

These stories have a common thread: philanthropy. Such inspiring investments in research and programs have led to life-saving discoveries and are critical to our work to create a cancer-free world.

In addition, you'll read about how a family has fostered collaboration among doctors, researchers and students through an esteemed lectureship.

We also have some very sad news. As this issue of impactCancer was being prepared for print, Clara D. Bloomfield, MD, longtime senior adviser to the OSUCCC – James, died following a recent fall at her home. Dr. Bloomfield was an internationally renowned medical scientist whose more than 50 years of research in hematologic malignancies, particularly acute myeloid leukemia, revolutionized science-based personalized treatment for patients. Her passing is a loss not only to our cancer program but to the world. You can read more about her career accomplishments at cancer.osu.edu/news.

For now, we hope you will enjoy our Winter 2020 impactCancer and the stories of people who are helping us create a cancer-free world.
