Team Up Against Breast Cancer with Kroger

Buckeye fans can show their support for breast cancer research by joining Kroger’s “Team Up Against Cancer” campaign. Kroger has created a one-of-a-kind pink Ohio State football balloon, offered exclusively in central Ohio stores, which feature a pink “Block O” and a green Buckeye leaf on the front, with “Go Bucks” on the back. Balloons sell for $2.99 each and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Spielman Fund. “’Team Up Against Cancer’ balloons are a colorful addition to any tailgate party, and they confirm fans’ support for breast cancer research. Fans may take their balloons home for their own celebrations or donate them back to the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute for patients undergoing treatment,” says Bruce Macaulay, president of Kroger’s Columbus division. “Stefanie was an inspiration to so many and we are proud to continue her legacy of hope.”

New T-shirt Pays Tribute to Spielmans

A new t-shirt featuring Chris Spielman’s #36 that the former Buckeye and NFL great wore during his college days as a student-athlete at The Ohio State University is available online and in stores. A portion of the proceeds from these shirts, which were developed with Chris’ input, benefit the Spielman Fund.

“Chris Spielman product has always sold very well in our stores and we are excited to offer our customers merchandise that not only celebrates Chris but also fights cancer,” say Johnny Campbell, president of Cardboard Heroes. “Chris was someone I looked up to as an athlete during his playing days at Ohio State and in the NFL. But I believe most of his fans and our customers are more proud of his behavior and actions off the field of competition. His loyalty, his love for family and his passion to give forward to his community are why he is a true hero in my mind and why so many of our customers continue to buy his merchandise,” Campbell says.

These special shirts are available at retail locations throughout Ohio including the Buckeye Room, Cardboard Heroes, College Tradition, Buckeye Corner and The Official Team Shop. Tees can also be found online at www.buckeyeroom.com, www.cheroes.com and http://shop.ohiostatebuckeyes.com.

Volvo Rents Gives Back

Volvo Rents Construction Equipment recognized a need within the community and is doing everything they can to meet it. What initially began as the “Pink Boom” project in support of breast cancer associations has expanded into the “Color for the Cause” project. This project now benefits eight different charities including The Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research. Volvo Rents supports these charities by painting their machinery with the color of the chosen charity and donating a percentage of that machine’s rentals to the charity. Thanks to this program, the Spielman Fund now receives 25 percent of Volvo Rents’ pink machinery rental sales. Look for Volvo Rents’ pink excavator on various jobsites and see your local Volvo Rents store giving back to breast cancer research!

Making a Difference… One Buckeye at a Time

Jonathan Cochran and Alexander Bork created a project that combines Buckeye spirit with a great cause – Buckeyes for a Cure. The duo’s goal is to sell 100,000 buckeye nuts in hopes of creating the world’s largest buckeye necklace and in doing so, raise funds for the Spielman Fund. After selling each buckeye, they number and string it on a necklace that will eventually weigh more than 1,200 pounds. They have reserved numbers #1 and #36 in honor of Stefanie and Chris. Once the necklace has been completed, it will be available for public viewing. Almost 4,500 buckeyes have been sold to date, but they need your help to make their goal! Visit www.buckeyesforacure.com to sponsor your buckeye in the necklace for just $2.50 each.

Tough Enough to Wear Pink Raises Nearly $63,000 for Breast Cancer Funds

Kay Tracy and Chip Jackson are committed to raising breast cancer awareness and are continually inspired by survivors and their stories. In response to their desire to fight this disease, Kay and Chip began the “Tough Enough to Wear Pink Horse Show.” In 2009, the event raised $19,500 for the Stefanie Spielman Patient Assistance Fund. Since the inception of the event in 2007, nearly $63,000 in total funding has been donated the Spielman Funds. This show is a combination of more than 50 open horse show and rodeo classes along with a silent auction, including a raffle of a pink manure spreader cleverly named “The Spreader of Hope.” The fourth annual show took place September 25-26 in Wilmington, Ohio. When the dust settles, Kay and Chip are hoping to have raised more than $30,000 this year. To learn more about this unique event, visit www.pinkribbonhorseshows.com.

The sixth annual Spielman Scramble was held June 28 at Little Turtle Golf Club in Westerville. The event, hosted by 97.1 The Fan, started in 2005 and has grown every year since. This year, the tournament added a second shotgun start and still sold out for the fourth year in a row. Both groups experienced a great round of golf, accompanied by great weather, fabulous gifts, contests on almost every hole, breakfast provided by Panera Bread, box lunches provided by Jimmy John’s and a sitdown dinner provided by Outback Steakhouse. This year’s event raised more than $21,000, bringing the cumulative event total donated to the Spielman Fund to more than $90,000.

Columbus International Auto Show’s Charity Gala

Every year, the Charity Gala is an exciting event that benefits a local organization committed to helping the community. This year was no different. The Columbus International Auto Show chose the Spielman Fund as the recipient of the proceeds from the 2010 Charity Gala held at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. This black-tie-optional event, called “Cars Are the Stars,” took place on the eve of the 2010 Columbus International Auto Show. The event, hosted by 10TV meteorologist Chris Bradley and chaired by Rhett Ricart from Ricart Automotive Group, was complete with a dinner program and music. The Columbus Auto Show later hosted a check presentation event, where the event committee presented the OSUCCC – James with a check for $34,000 for the Spielman Fund.
