Mad River Mountain – Pretty in Pink
Mad River Mountain hosted its annual “Pretty in Pink” event on Feb. 12, 2017. This family-friendly day of live music, skiing, tubing and competitions celebrated its seventh year in giving back to the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at the OSUCCC – James. All attendees are encouraged to wear pink and hit the slopes.
The resort raises funds by hosting a giant slalom fun race and a rail jam competition that is open to skiers and riders of all ages and abilities. Participants receive a goodie bag and raffle tickets with a $10 entry fee. In addition, $1 from every lift ticket sold that day is donated to the cause.
Members of the Mad River Mountain Snow Angels, an all-women’s ski and ride instructional group, volunteer their time roaming the resort selling bandanas, apparel and raffle tickets. A grand prize raffle giveaway at the end of the day raised nearly $2,500. The event continues to expand with more supporters, participants and competitors on the slopes each year! Chix With Stix
Chix with Stix hosted its 19th annual ladies-only golf outing on Sept. 8, 2017, at Raymond Memorial Golf Course to raise money for the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research. The outing, offered to all Columbus architects and designers, is not geared toward serious golfers, and all skill levels are encouraged to participate. They ended their day with an awards reception, where golfers enjoyed dinner and some great raffle prizes. This year’s outing raised $31,000, bringing the 19-year total to more than $450,000. Worthington Kilbourne High School Girls Field Hockey "Stick It to Cancer"!
The Worthington Kilbourne High School (WKHS) Girls Field Hockey team charged the field on Sept. 9, 2017, for the annual “Stick It to Cancer” game to raise awareness and funds for the Spielman Fund. The team hosted a doubleheader against Olentangy Liberty and Dublin Jerome high schools. In addition to the doubleheader, the Lady Wolves raised funds through sponsorships, social media, promotion of the game and sales of “Stick It to Cancer” T-shirts, tumblers, lanyards and other merchandise.
This event took root in 2014 when Eleanor Donaldson (Class of 2016) learned her grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer. She approached the WKHS Field Hockey Booster Board to create a philanthropic event that would raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research. The Spielman Fund was a perfect fit for the team’s efforts, and a community partnership began.
Under player leadership, the team effects positive change on and off the field. This year, it created multiple committees and recruited team members to increase involvement and money raised. The girls keep this annual event close to their hearts by playing to honor their loved ones who have been affected by cancer. The Lady Wolves raised over $4,300 this year and have raised more than $30,000 since the event’s inception.
Life's Short, Eat Dessert First
On Oct. 8, 2017, 10-year breast cancer survivor Paula Brose hosted her 10th annual “Life’s Short, Eat Dessert First” event at The Lakes Golf and Country Club in Westerville, Ohio. Upon Paula’s initial breast cancer diagnosis in 2007, she wanted to fight back by raising awareness and funds for breast cancer research and created a beautiful dessert-filled reception. Paula is a Longaberger sales consultant and weaves the Longaberger Horizon of Hope campaign throughout her event. She brings family, friends and her Longaberger customers together to celebrate life, survivorship and enjoy yummy desserts. Over the last 10 years, she has grown her event by encouraging attendees to bring a new guest each year.
This year, Paula hosted over 100 guests and invited Ann Mangino, a CNP at the Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center, to speak about new advances and care in breast cancer. Proceeds for the event are raised through ticket sales, silent auction, raffles, donations, door prizes and a brunch. Her family, friends and spouse stock the dessert table with their delicious homemade creations. To date, Paula has raised over $53,000, of that, more than $15,000 has been raised specifically for the Spielman Fund. For more information, please contact Paula Brose at paula.brose@aol.com.
