25 years of the Spielman Fund. 25 years of deciding each morning to take the hand we have been dealt and do something about it. 25 years of relentless support from our community. No one plans for cancer. They plan graduations, weddings and vacations. My parents did not plan to start a fund for breast cancer research, and I hope someday we do not need it. But until that day comes, nothing can stop us from carrying on my mom’s legacy. Although this sometimes feels like an impossible task, I know I am never alone.
I see her strength in the survivors I meet. I see her passion in the health care workers who fight daily for those battling the same disease she did. I feel her love from the community, and as I drive down State Route 315, I see her beautiful name on a building that provides hope, healing and love: the Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center.
I have been surrounded by cancer for most of my life. As I approach the age where my mom was initially diagnosed, I cannot fathom the bravery it must have taken to share her diagnosis with the world. She knew she was meant for something bigger than herself.
This issue of Legacy Magazine highlights the accomplishments of the Spielman Fund over the past 25 years and the incredible people who have helped us along the way. We could never have dreamed of what was in store when my parents started this fund. I am in awe of your continued support throughout the years.
Not a day goes by in which I do not think of my mom. Some days are easier than others. The one thing I know for sure is that she was not yet finished impacting people. Our work is not done. We believe in the people here at Ohio State and in the power of research. As we celebrate these 25 years, I want to thank every person who helped us get to this point. My family and I are forever grateful for those who have supported our cause. I hope you enjoy this issue of Legacy Magazine.
