Myth: Only older people get melanoma, one of the most aggressive forms of skin cancer. Fact: “This myth is absolutely false,” says Carlo Contreras, MD, an OSUCCC – James surgical oncologist who specializes in skin cancer and soft-tissue cancers. “I treat young adults and adolescents, and surgeons at Nationwide Children’s Hospital treat children — it can arise at any age.” The basis for this myth comes from the fact that the average age for the initial diagnosis of melanoma is 65. “But melanoma is not uncommon even among those younger than 30,” states the American Cancer Society. “In fact, it’s one of the most common cancers in young adults, especially young women.” So, it’s vital to ignore the myth, and stick to the facts. “The primary cause is the cumulative exposure to the sun over the years,” Contreras says. “So, that’s why it’s important to teach your children good sun behavior — to stay covered and to use sunscreen.”
