In the new home of the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, each in-patient unit will treat one type of cancer, and that subspecialized care is of vital importance for cancer patients.“The philosophy at The James is that we have experts who focus on one type of cancer,” says Richard Goldberg, MD, physician-in-chief of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James). Through this model, every individual involved in the patients’ care is focused on just one disease. “It allows for a deep understanding of the spectrum of that disease and how best to treat it,” Goldberg says.Furthermore, because there is no routine cancer, the OSUCCC – James treats cancer with a multidisciplinary approach. That means that experts from all different specialties – including medical oncology, surgery, radiation, nursing and more – work together on a team to manage a patient with a specific disease. In the new home of The James, this approach will be supported by the integration of clinical care and research, with research labs located in close proximity to inpatient rooms.. Because of this setup, “Laboratory researchers can get insights from people like me who are clinicians about how we need to answer new questions for our patients. Meanwhile, I can get insights from them on the latest laboratory techniques that we can apply to our patients,” Goldberg explains. “These days, top cancer care involves an interplay between researchers and clinicians.”This clinical care model in the new home of James allows many experts to bring their proficiency to each individual patient. “Those experts include an entire team of people who work together,” Goldberg says, “focusing on one kind of disease and trying to make the latest advances available to the individual who’s afflicted with that illness.”Learn more on this week’s segment of Toward a Cancer-Free World.
