As has been communicated, The Ohio State University and the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center (including the cancer program) are actively addressing the incredibly complex and dynamic situation as a result of coronavirus (COVID-19). At The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James), providing exceptional and compassionate patient care in a healthy environment is always a priority. Amid the news of the COVID-19 pandemic, we recognize that cancer patients and their caregivers may have specific concerns regarding their health. Recognizing that older people and people of all ages with severe underlying health conditions are at higher risk of developing a serious COVID-19 illness, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has set up a specific webpage for individuals at higher risk. It can be accessed here. We recognize that many cancer patients fall into this high-risk group. At the OSUCCC – James and at all of our outpatient cancer care clinics, we have instituted verbal screening of our visitors for viral symptoms to ensure that they do not pose any risk to our vulnerable patients. Additionally, we continue to stress the importance of everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases. These include: Covering your mouth with a tissue or sleeve when coughing or sneezing Avoiding touching your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands or after touching surfaces Washing hands often with water and soap for a minimum of 20 seconds or using an approved hand sanitizer Avoiding people who are sick Disinfecting high-touch surfaces Staying home when you are unwell If you do have symptoms, call your health care provider first; do not go to the office. It is important that many patients in active treatment continue to receive their treatment as planned. We are identifying patients whose outcomes are dependent on timely administration of cancer treatment or testing. We also are working to ensure that we continue to have the capacity to care for these patients if the outbreak broadly impacts our health system. Additionally, we are ensuring that our faculty and staff remain healthy and able to care for our patients with cancer. In everything we do, we are being thoughtful in preparing for this contingency, and we have the processes in place to seamlessly care for our patients.
