World-class cancer care and research continues to expand in central Ohio, where The James Outpatient Care is ready to open its doors on The Ohio State University campus. Buckeye health care leaders and guests recently gathered to cut the ribbon on the new state-of-the-art center in the university’s Carmenton innovation district, which will open to patients in July, offering outpatient and overnight surgical services to patients of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute. The 385,000-square-foot facility will feature several clinics focused on a variety of specialties, including hematologic and genitourinary cancers, along with spaces dedicated to imaging, immunotherapy, genetic counseling, and in fall, 2023, the region’s first proton therapy center. Read on as attendees of June’s ribbon-cutting ceremony share their thoughts on The James Outpatient Care Carmenton, and its potential impact on Ohio State’s work to create a cancer-free world. John J. Warner, MD, Chief Executive Officer of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and Executive Vice President at Ohio State “Ohio State continues to lead the way in providing compassionate, specialized and world-class care. This new outpatient care location is devoted entirely to cancer care and gives us the opportunity — and the space — to give our patients even better outcomes and more hope, from diagnosis, through treatment, to survivorship, now in an outpatient setting.” David E. Cohn, MD, MBA, Interim Chief Executive Officer and Chief Medical Officer, James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute “What's special about this outpatient facility is that it allows us to treat the right patient at the right place at the right time. We're so happy to be able to provide outpatient care services for patients’ cancer needs in one stop, from diagnosis to treatment and all the way through survivorship.” Raphael E. Pollock, MD, PhD, FACS, Director, The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center “This new building will complement our cancer research portfolio which takes place in laboratories all around the OSU campus by providing additional and/or enhanced clinical space for the delivery of our research-based care, including clinical trials that enable our patients to get started on the latest treatment options in the comfort and convenience of a standalone outpatient setting.” Brian Baker, cancer survivor “It's super exciting knowing that cancer patients will have this facility and this resource available to them. The impact that this care will have on new cancer patients is immense. I think it's going to be instrumental to, ultimately, their survival and their recovery.” LaQuinta Haynes, cancer survivor “This building is awesome — you get to look out and see the entire campus. It doesn’t seem like a hospital, it seems like hope. Just from going through, you can see so much that’s on site. Everything's in one building — what patient isn’t going to like that?” Steven Clinton, MD, PhD, medical oncologist specializing in prostate cancer “This is just simply a monumental landmark for us. Being here for 25 years, this is a moment to reflect on everything that's been accomplished so far and growing our genitourinary faculty from two to 25 exceptional clinicians. But, most importantly, it's a moment to appreciate the remarkable progress we have seen through research that has improved survival and quality of life for our patients. The new facility is going to have a profound impact on expediting access to the very best in seamless multidisciplinary care that is distinguished by clinical research.” Mindy Pifher, Director, The James Labs Operations “The outpatient laboratory will provide timely results to support all of our clinics — for example, PSA results for our prostate cancer patients. This means we'll be able to provide physicians with the tools and the knowledge that they need. Patients are going to know their next steps without waiting. it's so exciting to be able to be here and to be a part of something that is going to impact so many people's lives.” Kami Maddocks, MD, hematologist “This facility will give patients a space to come where they can have diagnostic imaging, diagnostic procedures and and receive cancer care, including access to the clinical trials unit. Also, as researchers, we have new facilities to create better therapies for cancer patients. It's exciting to be here and be a part of this innovation.” Shannon Thompson, DNP, RN, CNOR, NEA-BC, Senior Director of Surgical Services, James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute “With advances in surgery, including robotics, cancer patients sometimes don’t require overnight stays. This facility allows them to have those procedures here with the right kind of equipment and the right kind of staff. There are a lot of things in this building that are very similar to our inpatient hospital, but with more of a focus on outpatient care. We also have rooms here where patients can stay for an extended period of time, up to 23 hours.”  Click to learn more about The James Outpatient Care.
