The following post was written by Mollie Maggied, assistant nurse manager of BMT at the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute. My dad was a patient here for many years. The James gave us many extra years with him before he passed peacefully in The James ICU last year. My dad was a loving, kind, generous man, who never met a stranger, and had a love for Ohio State athletics he shared with many people, myself included. You can see from the picture his love for Ohio State spread far and wide as we ended up meeting a fellow Buckeye while vacationing in Hawaii, who lived 10 minutes away from my parents. This was possible because of The James and the great team who cared for him before, during and after his bone marrow transplant. Because of these great people, my family was able to take more family vacations and spend time at the beach. After being around the wonderful nurses during this time I had a strong desire to move home and be closer to family. When I made the decision to move home to be close to family, I wanted to work at The James because of the great care my dad had received over the years. The care and compassion the nurses showed during this time — and still to this day — is amazing. I was given the opportunity to work on BMT starting in February of 2015, with many nurses who cared for him during his transplant and his many stays after the transplant. People ask what kind of connection you have as a nurse or a patient here and I can personally say it is a deep connection as many of the nurses can still share stories about their patients and families, including my dad. As a family member who had a father here, my family and I can share stories about staff members who left a lasting impact on our family as well.
