Head and neck cancer doctors at Ohio State are using tech to minimize the impact of surgery on patients. Using minimally invasive surgical techniques, doctors are able to reach and remove tumors in deeper areas of patients’ bodies without the need for large incisions. In addition to robotic surgery — a growing technology in cancer treatment — oncologists at Ohio State are innovating by preparing for procedures with 3D printed models. “We use 3D printing because having tangible handheld models can really help us decide what approach and what angles to take to get access to some of these tumors,” Kyle VanKoevering, MD, says. “Our head and neck surgery team here at The James at Ohio State is one of only a very, very few programs in the country that is able to offer this caliber of care and this complexity of surgery for our patients.”
