Ohio State experts are using the latest radiology innovations to improve outcomes for patients with diseases of the veins. Venous diseases can cause a variety of health problems through blockages, size issues or even absences of veins inside patients’ bodies. “Patients can have swelling of their limbs and ulcers — sometimes they can lose their legs or other limbs,” radiologist Mina Makary, MD, says. Innovation in radiology at Ohio State is improving outcomes for many patients, however, through a group of procedures called venous intervention. “I make tiny incisions and then use a variety of techniques of catheters and wires and other tools (including balloons and stents) that we have to establish flow,” Makary says. Interventional radiology is growing into a new pillar of surgical care for patients with cancer and other serious conditions that formerly lacked proven therapies. “Because of the expertise and the innovation that we have here at Ohio State, we are leading interventions across the country,” Makary says. “We're able to offer patients hope who traditionally had no treatment options.” Click to learn more about imaging services at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.
