Relationships will be the foundation of the future of oncology nursing at Ohio State. Early in her nursing career, during an internship at a cancer hospital, Corrin Steinhauer, RN, DNP, NEA-BC, CPPS, learned a valuable lesson she’s never forgotten. A wise, experienced nurse taught her “how to build relationships with patients — how to be kind and to be there for them,” says the chief nursing officer of the OSUCCC – James. Steinhauer came to Ohio State in 2022 to continue a career in oncology nursing that has been defined by relationship-based care. Her focus on communication extends beyond patient relationships to include her team’s colleagues at The James, where Steinhauer believes her primary objective is to be an advocate for the staff of approximately 1,500 nurses. Steinhauer also worked on a new strategic nursing plan that ties in with the overall strategic plan for the rapidly growing OSUCCC – James. The goals of that plan, she says, “are to continue to be one of the top five cancer centers, which means a lot of leadership, at an informal, staff level, and also at a higher level for all of those with more formal, administrative titles. “How do we continue to develop this community of nurses and make sure we remain relevant, up-to-date and are practicing with the best evidence-based guidelines? That’s our goal.” Steinhauer came to Columbus from the University of Chicago, where she served as chief nursing officer and the vice president of patient care services at Ingalls Memorial Hospital. “We’re excited to welcome Corrine to Ohio State where she will help our exemplary nursing staff continue to elevate our commitment to relationship-based care with a focus on community, diversity, equity and inclusion, evidence-based practice, research, support for new nursing graduates and support for patient care growth,” her predecessor, Executive Director of Clinical Services Kris Kipp said upon Steinhauer's arrival.
