Relationships are the foundation of cancer care at Ohio State. “We put a tremendous effort into developing and sustaining relationships with our patients and their families, with our colleagues, to one’s self and to the community,” says Ruth Frankenfield, an OSUCCC – James psychiatric mental health advanced practice nurse. At Ohio State, Frankenfield teaches the basics of the Describe, Express, Specify and Consequence (D.E.S.C.) method to members of the James team and how it fits in with the patient-based care philosophy of the hospital. The D.E.S.C. method is designed to improve communications in order to resolve issues, which in turn leads to the best care for cancer patients at The James, according to Frankenfield. “D.E.S.C. helps create an environment that’s harmonious, and where we’re our most creative and happiest and can do our best work.” Frankenfield believes that the shared patient-first mentalities of The James team’s members helps make them receptive to D.E.S.C “The feedback I get is very positive.”
