Peritoneal cancer is a rare disease that can come from many different types of tumors that then spread cancer into the abdominal cavity and the lining that covers organs inside the abdomen. Dr. John Hays explains how experts are treating the disease at The James—from medical, surgical, radiation and gynecologic oncologists who specialize in peritoneal cancer to personalized treatments that can include something called HIPEC, a unique treatment usually done in association with surgery. HIPEC delivers chemotherapy directly into the abdominal cavity, where microscopic tumor cells and deposits can be hiding even after the tumor is removed.
