“What we’ve been able to accomplish would really make him proud — to know that what he first envisioned back in 1952 has actually occurred, and has occurred to a larger level than he could have ever imagined.” For William Farrar, MD, the CEO of the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute, the dream of his mentor, Arthur G. James, MD, of a freestanding cancer hospital on campus became a reality that has served as the home of Farrar’s own long and distinguished career. On a special episode of The James Cancer-Free World Podcast (part of a series on the hospital’s 30th anniversary), Farrar fills us in on the vision and determination of Dr. James. The episode also features Raphael Pollock, MD, PhD, the current director of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center. Pollock, a world-renowned sarcoma specialist, came to The James in 2013, shortly before the new and current facility opened. “This was an institution with ample resources that was poised to break out of the pack and move forward with a rapid-growth phase,” says Pollock. “This was a great fit for me.” Farrar came to Ohio State long before The James was built, learning from and partnering with the hospital’s namesake. On the podcast, Farrar describes James’s determination to bring state-of-the-art cancer treatment to central Ohio, his commitment to his patents and how, on the day the facility opened, James was given the honor of wheeling the first patient to their room.
