Light therapy at Ohio State is giving cancer patients some of the benefits of a sunny day without UV exposure. Patients undergoing lengthy cancer treatments can experience a number of side effects, some of which include fatigue and issues with mood. To address this, experts at the OSUCCC – James are testing bright white light therapy using small lights — approximately the size of a piece of paper — that provide some of the benefits of a sunny day without exposure to UV rays. “Our preliminary early results have showed that there has been an improvement in distress levels and a stabilization of the fatigue levels,” says Shelly Brown, MS, APRN-CNS-BC. “It's so exciting — there are things that are coming up all the time that nurses are recognizing as opportunities to provide comfort and improvement of quality of life to our patients.”
