Joel Mayerson, MD, professor in the Department of Orthopaedics in Ohio State’s College of Medicine, was recently elected as secretary of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons' (AAOS) Board of Councilors (BOC) The BOC manages AAOS relations with state and regional orthopaedic societies across the United States, conducting a wide range of programs to strengthen and support them organizationally. Dr. Mayerson’s role as secretary will progress to chair over three years. In addition, he was elected to serve on the AAOS Board of Directors for a three-year term beginning in March 2022. The board is the administrative authority of the AAOS, which is the pre-eminent professional society for orthopedic surgeons and the global provider of musculoskeletal education to orthopedic surgeons and others. Dr. Mayerson is an orthopedic oncologist specializing in bone and soft tissue cancers of the arms, legs and pelvis. At The James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, he serves as director of the sarcoma program and of musculoskeletal oncology, as well as medical director of perioperative services.
